Suicide: the leading cause of premature death
Suicide: the leading cause of premature death

For a number of years, statistics have shown that Quebec has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. After cancer, suicide has become the second major public health issue in Quebec. It is the leading cause of death among men under 40 and the cause of a third of all deaths among teens from 15 to 19.

Our team works on a number of awareness-raising and information campaigns about the problem of suicide in Quebec. Our mandates with the Association Québécoise de Prévention du Suicide have involved conducting exhaustive searches for information about the problem among researchers from McGill University, UQÀM, Quebec’s coroner’s office and its national public health institute, the Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec.

The awareness-raising campaigns made a big contribution to informing Quebecers about the extent of the problem, promoting the 1-866-APPELLE line, providing international visibility to Quebec researchers in suicide prevention and prompting the provincial government to implement a suicide prevention policy.
